Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

What is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy?

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, or DBT, is a type of therapy that teaches evidence-based skills to help you build your life worth living. DBT has skills modules of Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. It was initially created as a treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder, and also is effective for suicidal-ideation, self-harm, substance-abuse, anxiety, depression, as well as ground work for those working to heal from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD).

DBT focuses on balancing the skills of acceptance and change- something most of us need! As humans, we tend to struggle with all-or-none thinking. This can keep us stuck and limits us from enjoying the nuance that life has to offer. DBT skills are created so that we can challenge all-or-none thinking, be able to hold space for and regulate our emotions, and connect to the values and goals that make our life worth living.

DBT-Focused Sessions

At Minnesota Attachment Collective, we offer DBT-focused sessions. These are sessions where you work one-on-one with your DBT-Certified therapist to learn and practice DBT skills. Here, you can learn DBT skills at your own pace and be given individualized recommendations for how to practice these skills outside of session.

This is a great option for those who may not need the full DBT program of individual and group therapy sessions. This can include those who have previously graduated from a DBT program but would like a personalized refresher, someone who would like to learn DBT skills to help with anxiety or depression, someone who is looking to build a foundation of DBT skills before working on trauma-work, someone looking for skills for suicide or self-harm prevention, or someone who meets criteria for borderline-personality disorder but would prefer to not be in group and is highly committed to their individual skills practice. Our individual DBT-focused sessions can also be a great fit for someone who is in a DBT-group but does not need an adherent DBT-therapist. Maddie, our DBT Therapist, is fully trained and certified in DBT, but our sessions do not include coaching calls, which is required for some groups.

Some do benefit more from a fully adherent DBT program, so if you’re not sure if our DBT-focused sessions would be a good fit for you, feel free to schedule a free 15-minute consultation with Maddie to see what option may be best for you!
